History of Ibeju Lekki – Ibeju Lekki is now the new gold. It is a fast developing neighborhood in Lagos; many people are now looking to buy a land or property there, all thanks to the Multi-million projects already being built there. Some even refer to it as ‘the future of Lagos’. However, only few people know the history of Ibeju Lekki.
Ibeju-Lekki is one of the Local Governments areas of Lagos state; it is one of the many local Government areas created by the then head of state, General Ibrahim Babangida. The name was derived from two communities: Ibeju and Lekki. Ibeju-Lekki was formerly a swampy area; a backwater suburb to the Epe central and north.
Ibeju-Lekki is predominantly occupied by Ijebu speaking people who initially settled in Local governments around Ibeju-Lekki such as Abijo, Awoyaya, Eputu and Elemoro to mention a few. There are now other people from different parts of the country and the world residing in the area.
MAP AND LOCATION OF IBEJU-LEKKI
Ibeju-Lekki is bounded in the East by Epe local Government, the west by Eti-Osa Local government, in the North by Epe local government and finally in the south it joins ends with the Atlantic Ocean. Ibeju Lekki is located at approximately latitude 4015’north latitude 4017′ north and longitude 13015′ east and 13020′ east. At its widest point, Ibeju-Lekki is about 20 kilometers long and about 20 kilometers at its widest point.

Ibeju-Lekki is arguably one of the fastest growing Local Government areas of Lagos state mostly due to the industrial development going on in the area. The major infrastructural projects include the Lekki Deep Seaport, the Dangote Refinery and Petrochemical Park set for completion over the next 3 years. Ibeju-Lekki region is already on its way to establishing itself as a major hub of industrial and commercial activity.
POPULATION OF IBEJU-LEKKI
According to the National Population Commission of Nigeria (web), National Bureau of Statistics (web), the population of people in Ibeju-Lekki as at 2016 was 162,200 which include 60,729 males and 57,064 females. The population projection assumes the same rate of growth for all LGAs within a state.
IBEJU LEKKI ESTATES
Like I earlier said, Ibeju-Lekki is a fast developing area and there are estates springing up on a daily. Here are some estates in Ibeju-Lekki:
Merit Park: this is probably the very first Estate on the Lekki Free Trade Zone Road. It is a beautiful waterfront estate located a minute drive from Eleko beach
Rehoboth Park & Gardens: this is located at Ibeju-Lekki after eleko junction few minutes from La Campagne.
RoseBerry Estate Lekki: This is located just after Pan Atlantic University, Campus Opposite Odunnbaku a few minutes’ drive before the new Int’l Airport Ibeju-Lekki directly off lekki Epe Expressway.
Amen Estate: This is on Eleko Beach Road, Ibeju Lekki.
Royalflex estate Phase 3: This is located 1 minute after La Campagne Tropicana resort along the Lekki Free Trade Zone Express road axis, Ibeju Lekki.
